Olive the Ostrich and a giveaway!

Olive the Ostrich is back! A friend of mine just had a beautiful little baby girl and I knew that I wanted to make her a little dress and bloomers out of my Olive the Ostrich fabric. The line will start shipping with Robert Kaufman this November. At the rate that this summer is flying by, it will be here before you know it!

Making the dress and bloomers was my first go at ruffles and thanks to some great tips from ya'll, I was able to master them. (I used a piece of twine and a zig zag stitch and they came together without any more gnashing of teeth.) I used McCall's 6539 pattern which I had no trouble following once I figured out the ruffle situation. I adore the way the scale of the ostriches in the fabric and the little hearts are just so sweet.

And here's the lovely model, Ella! She's a petite little thing and I made everything waaaaaay to big, but she'll grow into it, right? :) She is absolutely swimming in her little ostrich suit :) How beautiful is she?

So...who wants some Olive the Ostrich? I have 2 FQ packs to give away to 2 of you! Just leave me a comment here and tell me what sewing skill you've recently conquered (or want to conquer!). I will draw the winners the morning of Wed 8/8/12.

My fun berry basket from Anthropologie. Have been waiting to fill it with FQs for a photo shoot. I suspect you will be seeing it again!

The selvage even has little hearts on it. They make me smile. :)

I'm working on a patchwork wall hanging right now and have incorporated a bit of Olive into it. Hoping to make some headway on it this weekend and can share it with you next week. Have a wonderful weekend and good luck everyone!

I'm going to need that line of fabric! You are soo awesome!

My new sewing adventure is hexies!!! I heard they were addicting BUT SERIOUSLY!!

  3. I've loved this since the first sneaky peek I saw. I love Ostriches! Those little ruffled bloomers are adorable too!

I would like to conquer sewing zippers into garments or other things. I know it probably seems easy enough, but I've always been intimidated by them.

    ReplyDelete
  4. I have also jumped on the Hexy bandwagon and I am loving it! It makes you look at fabric in a whole new way!

This fabric line is adorable! Thanks for the chance to win!

  5. That dress is adorable! I reaaly need to work on elastic, that strechy litte bugger!

  6. I've been sewing so long, I've tried just about every facet of it. (Can't think of anything new I've tried lately.)The little dress and bloomers are adorable and so is the baby!

    ReplyDelete
  7. I am intimidated by pillows... I would like to make one one day soon

    ReplyDelete
  8. i'd like to conquer the actual starting of a project!!! i tend to procrastinate heavily when i'm not quite sure of all the details, when in reality the time is better spent muddling through it - i could probably perfect it by trying it a few times faster than waiting around until i figure it all out in my head!

  9. I must learn how to machine quilt. I am so scared to try anything except straight lines

    ReplyDelete
  10. I've been doing more machine quilting rather than paying for it to be done. Mostly smaller projects, but I'm getting better.

    ReplyDelete
  11. I just ordered this collection for my shop... so cute to see what you did with it.

  12. These are super cute, and so is the baby and her new clothes!

I've been working on embroidery lately, trying to improve my skills there. But next up will probably be using zippers, something I've never done before. (But there are a million and one tutorials online, so I'm bound to figure it out without too much trouble.)

  13. Maybe it's a little silly, but I've been learning how to use the square in a square method to get me out of some intricate small triangle piecing. Thanks for sharing with us! :)

  14. hmm...well I'm trying to conquer paper piecing patterns using the freezer paper technique. I went to bed last night thinking about it, so I guess it is on my brain. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  16. Ah, cute model! And cute dress :)
I would really like to be able to free motion quilt. I have been trying to get there for almost two years now but somehow my machine just don't want me to (at least that is what I am convinced is going on :) )

  17. Love the ostriches! Makes me want to do baby clothes again! As a longtime hand quilter I have been slowing improving my machine quilting.

  18. I just learned how to long arm quilt and I made my first quilt with it. I LOVE it and it looks awesome (toot, toot says my horn).
I really like the ostrich print even though I had an ostrich bite me when I was 7 years old and haven't wanted anything to do with ostriches since. Clearly the ostrich I met wasn't a loving ostrich like Olive.

  19. I mastered french seams this summer. Love that wee girl & your ostriches are sweet. Thanks for the chance to win.

  20. So cute!

I want to learn quilt stitching. I can do simple things, like straigh lines, but I want to learn how to do the swirls and flowers and other fun things. So, I think that I need to take a class!

  21. What a cute little model ... and your fabric line is fantastic as well.
This may sound silly but I have finally figured out how to work with metallic thread! After many long talks with the nice ladies at my LQS and finding out that I should NOT talk about thread with the mechanics. I learned that there is such a thing as a metallic thread needle, need to drop my tension and slow WAY down. Apparently I kept melting my thread ... oops. Keep up the good work. Your fabric is beautiful as always. Thanks for the great giveaway.

  32. those ruffles are the cutest thing I have ever seen. I regret that my little one is already 2 and a half and I missed the chance to put ruffles on her butt when she was crawling around. You did a fantastic job! And those ostriches are to DIE for. I made a little dress with the Llama fabric but I don't think my kid's wardrobe will be complete without one from ostrich fabric as well!

    ReplyDelete

  140. I am certain that each design you produce is my favorite ... and then you go and create something else wonderful. Olive is simply adorable!

My latest sewing skill seems to be determination. I just completed 12 box bags (zippers and all) for my knitting group to use as project bags. Since most of us are working on the same pattern during the Olympics, I made the bags out of Next Stop London. Finished just in time to hand them out at our cast-on party!

  145. I would love to win some Olive fq fabric for the one year old Olive in my life!

I have taught myself quilting but I do the stitching by hand. Time to learn some free motion machine quilting I think! I also want to learn zippers so I can make a wider range of baby clothes.

  149. This outfit is so adorable! I must practice my ruffle skills, now that I have conquered my fear of zippers :)

    ReplyDelete
  150. Ruffles. I have done them years ago, but i am putting off making some lovely ruffle skirts simply because of the ruffles. It could also be because of the price of buying a ruffle for my machine, which means I am going to be doing them by hand for a while....
As always Lauris, another stunning fabric line, WOW!

  153. I'm embarrassed to admit it but I have been slowly learning to quilt and have 5 unquilted tops that I think are beautiful but I'm afraid I'll wreck them with crummy beginner quilting. One of them is a baby quilt for a co-worker's son who just turned one. I really should just give myself permission to try...

  175. Love the whole line of fabrics....but especially the
ostrich fabric with the little hearts....so dear. And the
outfit you created is beautiful (so is the model ) !
The latest technique I've learned ? Well I put aside
my quilting to make my dog some jazzy new collars...
I recycled the hardware from two old collars...the first
one I used some Kaffe Fassett fabric & the second I'm
recycling an old Guatemalan belt of mine. Now it's
    back to quilting !

  176. What fun fabrics- I do love the pink ostrich- Thanks for chance to win such cuteness( though it is not as cute as that beautiful baby )
I have been getting some quilting done so that is the main thing- got a couple of quilts cut one and one almost sewn together. Progress is a wonderful thing..
    Warmest regards,
    Anna

  183. Oops - I was (as always) in a hurry and forgot to tell you my latest accomplishment ... well - I made a stack n whack. I guess I should say I am "making" the stack n whack - I have the "wheels" cut and sewn - now to add the triangles and sashing.
One of those would be cute for a baby - Keep those eye's moving all over to interesting patterns and designs.
    Fun!
