Belated Blogiversary Giveaway

I accidentally missed my 3 year blogiversary! I cannot believe three years have gone by since this first post on July 9, 2008. And then there was the process of saying goodbye to Brooklyn and NYC and returning to Austin. What a wild and wonderful ride it's been!! You have all been such a huge part of helping me meet my goals, so in honor of my blogiversary, I'm giving away a FQ set of my Nesting Chairs fabrics + a Nesting Chairs DIY Pillow Panel. The winner can choose from either color story.

Here's the rules:
Just leave me a comment here and tell me about your very first sewing project.
When you leave your comment just make sure you include a way for me to contact you.
I'll draw the winner this coming Wed. morning 8/3/11 after 8am CT.

Thanks to all of you for your amazing encouragement, support and inspiration along the way. I can hardly wait to see what the next few years hold.
xoxo

  2. My first sewing project was in high school, I made an apron, and I really hated the bias binding I had to use! :)

  3. My very first sewing projects were clothes for my Cabbage Patch Doll when I was a kid. She had quite the wardrobe. Now that I look back on those I'm quite impressed with my 10-year-old self. I just used her other clothes as patterns.

  4. My first sewing project was a halloween costume my sophomore year of college. I made a cape a skirt to go with a little red riding hood outfit. If only I knew then what I know now lol.

  5. I still have the little sampler I stitched at school when I was seven, after that I don't think I tried again until I was a miserable teen and no-one made clothes I liked (not black enough!!).

    Happy belated 3rd!

  6. I made a little pink gingham dress and diaper cover for my first niece. I was in middle school and I was totally hooked after I completed the outfit.

  7. My first completed project was a simple quilt for my nephew when I was 12. He was born 5 years later. Never to early!

  8. I made myself a pair of pants when I was a teenager, unfortunately they ripped and fell apart when I tried to wear them.

  9. I think my very first sewing project must have been when I was at play school and we made little mats for mothers day by embroidering patterns with floss in binca canvas. I bet my Mum still has it somewhere too!

I love the aqua orange colourway.

  10. First sewing project was a quilt that went in the garbage, so sad.

  11. Happy 3 years! I honestly don't remember my very first project. I must have been very small when I made it as my Mum would have had me sewing as soon as I could hold a needle. The first thing I can remember making is a fabric book for a child as part of my GCSE. I did abysmally which always makes me smile now as I'm nowhere near as terrible as I used to be :)

  12. Not counting the dabbling I did in middle school my first sewing experience was a blouse I decided to make for myself for work. I bought some silky slippery material and tried to sew it on a mini machine. I got it all the way to the hemming stages and needing to sew on buttons when I found out I was pregnant. It was a fitted blouse and there was no way I would be able to fit into it while pregnant so I put it away never to work on it again. It was a disaster anyway, that fabric and a mini sewing machine were NOT a good combination! I have found I'm much more successful with quilts and clothes for my daughter and haven't attempted to make any clothes for myself since.

  13. I went to a sewing class at the local Singer store when I was 12 (not telling the year). First project was a blouse. Why they had us doing interfaced collars, set-in sleeves and buttonholes on a first project is beyond me! But I soon learned there were simpler patterns and I never stopped!

  14. When I finally got back into sewing, about six years ago, my first project was a wedding memory quilt for my brother. I'd never made a quilt before and it was quite the tricky task to jump into :)

  15. First sewing experience... I was probably about 10 when I talked my mom {who doesn't really sew} into teaching me how to sew. We picked out and apron, got the fabric cut out, and partly sewn together when the belt on her sewing machine broke. And that was the end of my lesson. It wasn't until college and I was living near my cousin {who sews!} that I really learned how to sew anything.

  16. Congratulations on your 3 years! My first sewing project was with my SewPerfect sewing machine when I was 5 or 6. I made a little bag and a stuffed cat. I'll never forget doing that because I did it by myself.

  17. My very first sewing project (that I remember!) was 45 years ago - my grandmother helped me make a pair of shorts with zipper, darts and waistband when I was eight! I remember my mother wondered out loud why she started me with such a complicated project - but I'm kind of glad she did! I've never really been scared of doing much with a sewing machine because of it!!

Congratulations on 3 years, and here's hoping for many many more!!

  18. Congratulations!!
The first project I can remember was a dirndl skirt for myself - I was about 8 !!

  19. Happy blog anniversary. First sewing project would have been when I was at school and we were 'forced' to make a nightie. Put me off button holes for life!

  20. gosh, my first sewing project, well I know I had a few dolls clothes etc in my youth, but since I re-visited the craft as a mother it would have been a very easy Oliver + s skirt for my daughter, and now it just hasn't stopped! Congratulations on your anniversary I would definitely take the yellow and grey - i love it!

  21. My first project was an apron. I used some turquoise and white gingham checks, and with Nana's help I did some cross stitch for a border on the pocket and the bottom edge using red floss. Those color choices would be a big hit today, but I made that apron in the 1950's ;)

  22. Happy blogiversary!

My first sewed items were coasters - pretty simple, but I was proud of them:)

    ReplyDelete
  23. My first sewing projet was a little tumbler quilt for my kitties!

    ReplyDelete
  24. I think my first sewing project was making cheerleadering skirts for Halloween costumes when I was in 6th grade. I'm sure I had a lot of help from my mom, but I'm pretty certain that I did almost all of the actual sewing by myself. I just finished grad school, and until very recently, still had that skirt. Thanks to an elastic waist, it got lots of use by lots of people for lots of really random stuff over the years!

  25. Congratulations Laurie!!
I really can't remember if this was my very first sewing project since I started when I was about 6 years old...but it must have been a dress for my favourite doll. Made with help from my mum. I remember being so proud of it :-)

  26. My first quilt was a tiny wall hanging that was completely hand cut, pieced and quilted. There are 3" squares and a Heart Applique with a 2" border. I still have it and I still love it. Ps. Happy Blogiversary and these fabrics are super duper awesome. What a treat! Thanks for the chance to win them :)

  27. Congratulations, Laurie! I am delighted you started blogging 3 years ago. Thanks for all your sharing. My first sewing project was a quilt for my new daughter in law. So fun!! That was about 4 years ago and I am just now finishing a quilt for me. Definitely love giving to others!! Thanks for the wonderful giveaway opportunity! I love your grey and yellow colorway. Hugs!!

  28. My very first sewing project was when I was ten years old and just joined a 4-H club. It was an elastic waisted skirt and a scarf with torn fringe. Could have even been made from feedsacks now that I think about it. Started me on my way to a long life with a sewing machine. :)

thx so much for the chance to win such great fabrics.

    ReplyDelete
  29. My first sewing project was a gathered skirt in 4-H. That set me on the path of sewing most of my clothes in high school, and now as a quilter. Thanks for the giveaway. Kathie L in Allentown

  32. I love the pillow panel in aqua and orange, very cute!

My first sewing project was in middle school. We all made denim draw string laundry bags. That was the first and hopefully only time that I had sewn threw my thumbnail. Ouch!

  33. My very first sewing project was when I "inherited" my mother-in-law's sewing machine. She passed it on to me, and taught me how to make a pillow case. I remember being so proud of myself! :)

  34. Congratulations on the blogaversary! My very first sewing project was a pair of jams - you remember those knee length shorts popular in the eighties. I think they were a purple print and my grandmother helped me make them and taught me to sew.

  35. Fabulous giveaway! My first sewing project was from a library book I checked out on making little dollhouse dolls when I was about 12. I made a victorian style doll with a few outfits from scraps of things my non-sewing mom let me cut up. I still have her tucked away somewhere in the attic!

  36. A huge congrats to you Laurie! I think I've read (and enjoyed!) every post!! Looking forward to many more!

  37. My very first sewing project was a dress for a rabbit dolly (I was perhaps 7?). It was made from felt and I was so proud of every last giant stitch! Congrats on the blogaversary, and thanks for the chance to win!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Congrats! (And thanks for the chance to win your cute fabric!) I started sewing pretty early--I'm sure my first sewing project was probably something I could wear.

  39. I've been sewing since before I can remember. My grandmother gave me a little needlework bunny I made when I was 4. It hangs above my computer to remind me to learn new things each day. Thanks for the chance!

  40. All I want to say about my very first sewing project was it was a disaster! My mom riped it all out and I didn't try to sew again for over 40 yrs.

  41. my very first sewing project was when I was a little girl and I made a knit coral jumper. Oh lordy...I don't know what I was thinking! I don't think that I wore it that much. lol

  42. My first sewing project was a bathrobe I made in 8th grade Home Ec. I wish I had it, tucked away in a box somewhere. I'd love to incorporate some of that fabric in my later projects...when I finished it, I never imagined how I would come to love my sewing machine.

I think my first sewing project would have been a little embroidery stitches sampler mat made at school. I also remember stitching up a bunch of headscarves for me and my friends while staying with my grandma when I was about 10 :)

  48. Happy blogiversary!
Being the youngest of 4 girls and with 12 years between me and the oldest I had to teach myself how to use my Mum's sewing machine to adapt their clothes that were passed on to me. By the time it was my time to wear them they were embarrassingly unfashionable! My first sewing project was to make some flared jeans into drainpipes for the school disco. :)

    ReplyDelete
  49. Ack! I love this fabric!!! My first sewing project was a baby quilt for my daughter who is now 4.5 years old. I chuckle when I look at it now but at the time I thought it was amazing. LOL

    ReplyDelete
  50. I hate to say, but I have absolutely no recollection of my first sewing project, except it was probably a clothing item. But in the intervening years, the projects have ranged from quilts to a cover for a 40 foot sailboat, so the skills have come in handy.

  51. My first sewing project was when I was about seven and my mum helped me make a circle skirt. Out of some truly scary 80's fabric!

  53. my first project was a childs apron for a kindy that we made in home ec at school when I was 13. My teacher pulled me up in front of the class and told everyone that this is exactly NOT what to do when sewing. She was really mean and I never wanted to sew again after that. Then my mum taught me to quilt.... The rest is history.

  54. My first real sewing project was in 4-H where we made a top and skirt (white top and kelly green skirt for 4-H colors). The top was two pieces of white fabric sewn up to make a spot for the head and arms to go. The skirt was gathered on a band with snap closures. Wish I could remember how to do these, as would be a wonderful easy kid's project. I was about 8 years old.
I like the yellow and grey colorway. Thanks for the drawing. mlwright29(at)hotmail(dot)com

  55. Congratulations on 3 years!!! I still have me first sewing projects. 40+ years ago my [Grand]Mama taught me how to sew on preprinted Barbie dresses. She insisted that I first sew by hand! Poor Barbie and Midge looked as if they had been in a fight when they wore those sad little dresses!

  56. Congratulations on 3 years of blogging! My first sewing project was with my grandmother. She taught me how to use her machine and I made a pouch for my jacks : ). I still have it and it makes me smile. I would pick the yellow and grey color way.

  57. My mom wanted to teach me to sew when I was in 5th grade. I chose a pattern for a knee-length pair of shorts and some thin white fabric with a thin rainbow stripe. They. Were. HIDEOUS. And so thin that my undies showed. Mama wanted me to show them off to my friends. I think I hid them at the back of the closet! :)
Thanks for the chance to enter -- LOVE these fabrics!

  63. I honestly don't remember my first sewing project! My mom was always sewing, and I would beg her to let me do some too. My first project was probably a simple stuffed pillow.
One of the first projects that I remember being really proud of, though, was a purse. I made it from a Lazy Girl pattern the year after I graduated from college. I hadn't done much sewing before then, but I made my mom the purse-zipper and all!

  68. My first project was a panelled skirt made at school. I never did wear it and eventually cut up the fabric to make quilt patches. Happy blogiversary - enjoy the rest of your journey.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Not counting the dolls clothes from age 6 onward, I made a quilt in 6th grade, and a vest in 7th grade. I think of the vest as my first real sewing project because I followed a pattern.
Congrats on 3 years of blogging. Love your designs.

  70. OMG! I want this so much! I adore the yellow colourway, loved it since i first set eyes on it. My first sewing project? I took a little batik skirt I had, lay it on some newspaper and cut out a pattern. Then I sewed myself my very first skirt on my grandmother's old treadle machine. I was so proud! I was 15 years old.

    ReplyDelete
  71. My first project was probably a pillow case I made in secondary school. It was tie dyed and looking back it was pretty nasty. My mum kept it for a few years but I doubt she still has it.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Thank you for the giveaway. I love, love, love your fabric, especially the yellow colorway--my favorite color. My first project was a sampler quilt as part of a class I signed up for at a local quilt shop. It was predominantly yellow and blue. angela.newman5363@yahoo.com

  75. Congratulations ... I can't believe it's been three years! I think I've been reading your blog since (almost) the beginning!
My first sewing projects were dresses for my Barbie dolls made from the scraps of fabrics my Grandma put in her trash bin as she was sewing. I had watched her sew since I was a baby, so one day I picked up the needle and thread and copied what she did. I haven't stopped since!

I can't remember ever NOT sewing, but one of the earliest ones was a pink pig pillow. It was oval with little felt eyes, nose and ears. It was kinda of creepy, but my mom was proud (as was I) and it was kept in use for a very long time. I think I still have it somewhere in my childhood home!

  80. My first sewing project was in high school for Home Ec. I attempted to make a pair of slacks for the project. They were double knit, no less - after all, this was in the 60's. THREE times I sewed the front of the left pants leg to the front of the right pants leg. After ripping it out THREE times, the fabric was stretched and had holes in it. So we had to go buy more fabric for the project. I eventually got something sewn, but didn't sew anything else for approximately 38 years. And that happened when my daughter was pregnant with my only grandchild. I made her a quilt. And that's when my love of quilting was born.

    ReplyDelete
  81. My first project was a log cabin quilt for my mom during my first year of marriage. It was fun to learn the quilt-in-a-day method and surprise my mom!

    ReplyDelete
  82. I love your fabrics! My first sewing project was doll clothes for my "babies" when I was about 7 or 8 and made myself a dress when I was 10. I can still see that dress in my mind...8-)

  83. Hi, happy anniversary! My first sewing project was a patchwork purse. It's a bit wonky, but I love it!

  84. My first project was a blue and green plaid jumper. I sewed one side seam correctly and the other inside out! I also learned to rip and happily wore it and continued sewing for years.

  85. <3 that aqua and orange combo!
my very first sewing project was a pair of PJ pants with my grandma when I was 6 :) I still have them sitting in storage. They're shiny and blue - I looked a little like a harem girl, actually!

    ReplyDelete
  86. My first sewing project was insanely ambitious - a twin sized quilt with alternating pinwheel and sailing ship blocks - all by hand. By the time I had half the blocks done (years!) I hated the colors and gave up.

    ReplyDelete
  87. Congratulations on 3 great years!

I tried sewing a bit when I was younger but I never got in to it.
Then, about a year and a half ago, I was admiring a quilt made by one of my best friends and something just clicked! I have been obsessed ever since! I am on quilt # 10 and still going strong. Your blog was actually one of the first "Sewing" blogs I subscribed to! Thanks for all the great inspiration!

  88. If I'm remembering correctly, my first real sewing project was turning a cross-stitch panel into a pillow with ruffles and lace when I was in elementary or middle school. I was so proud to have finally finished a project, and it still sits on my bed at my parents' house!

    ReplyDelete
  89. I love nesting chairs! Happy blogiversary!
My first FINISHED sewing project was a red wrap-around jumper embellished with little mushroom appliques. I loved it! My mother was a home-ec major and was determined I would learn to sew. She sat me at the sewing machine as soon as I was old enough and turned me loose! :)

  90. I'm fairly new to your blog but love your work and have recently managed to get hold of some Urban Circus and am treasuring it for now! My first sewing project I can't really remember but I think it was dolls from preprinted panels with my mum (and funnily enough I made dinosaurs yesterday from a preprinted panel with my 2 girls!). Thanks for the chance to win.

  91. My first finished project was a patchwork quilt for my boyfriend at the time (I was in college, the first time around) and it was a king-size quilt. Nothing like starting out with a small project! :) It helped that my mom was a quilter and therefore such a project didn't seem intimidating in the least. :)

    ReplyDelete
  92. my first was a pillow in home ec class in 7th grade. the material was blue with horses, though i don't have it any more. i'm sure the craftsmanship left a bit to be desired, but it would be fun to have my first one!

  93. my very first project was a quilt. my mom owned a custom drapery workroom for 27 years...and if you can believe it...i taught myself to sew. i never had the patience until after i moved out of the house. now i'm happy to get her help :)

  94. One of my first projects not counting the apron I made in school was a two piece bathing suit. I was 15 years old at the time and purchased the fabric with my babysitting money. It fit perfect and was so cute. I made it to wear to my first teen party (with boys) which was a pool party. I was looking so cute when I dived into the pool. I swam to the shallow side of the pool and stood up out of the water to learn that my top was not where it should be. The back band on my top was 2 to 3 times wider than it was before my dive. I of course was mortified! I had cut the band section in the wrong direction of the fabric grain. An emotionally painful lesson that I have never forgotten.
I love your tufted tweet fabric. I have it in red, blue and purple but my favorite color scheme is the yellow and grey. I sure would love to win!

  95. Congrats! And what a great prize!
My first projects were barbie clothes when I was little (8 or 10 maybe). There wasn't much fitting involved. :D My mom saved that little sewing machine for me so I still have it. It was tan with an orange lid and did a chain stitch.

  105. My first project was a throw blanket made out of 6'' squares, using cottons and knit fabric and backing it in fleece. 106. Congratulations on 3 wonderful years of living your dream!
My first sewing project happened my first year teaching. My planning period was the same time as Home Ec (I taught in a small school). So when I could, I would go and sit with my students and learned how to sew. I had to raise my hand to ask how to thread the needle, I had to rip out my zipper along side Tara and Suzannah, I learned how to tease my bangs like they did... :) And I made the exact same dress my students did. We all had to wear our dresses on the same day and I felt cool and lame all at the same time.
That dress is long gone, by the way. :)

And I love both color ways! How could I ever choose?! ;-) Cheers!

  108. My first sewing project was a doll dress that I made for my Barbie doll. I remember picking fabrics that I thought would match her long red pony tail. It was fun sewing by hand with a needle and thread, especially underneath the dining room table where I played with my sister. Thanks to my mom for getting me my first sewing machine and teaching me to sew. And thank you to you for the giveaway! I would love to have some of your fabric for my projects.

Congratulations on your 3rd year of blogging. I made a red sling type bag in grade 7 Home Ec. I still have it, which was sewn many many moons ago.

  110. My first sewing tempt...was making my sister's baby girl quilt. My great grandmother was the last one who made many quilts. I felt like it was a dying "hobbies" in our family and wanted to try to have that again to be able to pass along quilts like my great grandma did. I started to make an 4" sqaure patch quilt to make it easier and to see how I do...I must said I did a good job..My 3 years old neice is still carried it around everywhere she goes..I made me feel good..now I am on my 4th and 5th quilt..(which is pooche and pickup..love that line!!!) for my twins son. I love your line! Thank you!

  111. Yeah for blog anniversaries! :)

I started sewing two years ago and my first project was a set of coasters- I even used a charm pack. :) I was so proud of my project and they are still in use at my house, as wonky as they are. Since then I've made loads of quilts, bags and potholders but those mis-matched little coasters will always hold a place in my nerdy sewing heart!

  112. I have two "sewing lives". I first sewed when I was a pre-teen. I sewed a skirt for 4-H that I never wore b/c I decided that the material that I had picked out was ugly (it is a moody time in life!) And then 20 years later I took up sewing again, starting with sewing clothe diaper wipes for my baby girl!

  113. I actually just jumped into sewing. Three years ago, I made myself a strapless green dress (complete with full lining and boning support) so I could be Tinkerbell for Halloween. The dress fits terribly, but I'm still pretty proud of it!

    Happy Blogiversary!
My first sewing project was 7th grade home ec - a pink duffle bag with blue handles. My first non-graded project was a poufy-sleeved dress that matched my best friend's - her sister taught me to sew.
I'm hoping that somewhere in the future, my nieces will answer that question with fond memories of sewing with their aunt.

  117. Hey, Laurie. Congratulations! Hmmm...can't remember exactly what my first sewing project was--probably for my Barbie doll. I LOVE your fabric. But you already know that, right? :)

I've always sewn a bit, but my first real project was a hand pieced quilt. Loved it. Still haave it, but wow, have I learned a lot since then!

  120. I think my first sewing project was a shift dress, too. Purple with little pink flowers. I still have some of that fabric.

  121. Congratulations Laurie. Thanks for the great giveaway!

I don't remember my first sewing project--my mother sewed EVERYTHING so I started young. I do remember hand sewing clothes for my baby dolls though.

  122. Happy blogiversary! We are so happy to have you around.

My first sewing project was a skirt that I was altering. It turned out TERRIBLE! But, I guess that is how all first projects go.

  123. Wow, I'm thinking I was probably 9 or 10 and my aunt taught me to trace / cut squares, then use the machine to piece them, thus becoming my first quilt. A love affair started that day ( 20-some years ago) ur a beautiful designer!

  124. My very first quilting project was when I was in 3rd or 4th grade. I had just gotten an American Girl doll the year before for Christmas and my mom showed me how to sew her scraps together for a doll quilt. It was supposed to be nice even squares with a border, but turned out to be crazy uneven rows. So much fun and a memory I will have forever.

  125. My very first sewing project was making a pillowcase at school. I would have been 10 I think. After that I made myself a skirt. I love sewing, more now that I'm older and can read patterns (even difficult ones).

  126. Happy Blogiversary! I love your fabric! My first sewing project was a floppy 60's style sun hat for my barbie doll! I was probably 11. I wanted one bad and we didn't get everything we wanted :-) I figured out the 3 pieces and cut them out of some leftover polyester scraps that wouldn't fray. I hand stitched it together and it worked great! And it fit Barbie perfectly!

  127. Happy blogversary! What a delightful giveaway...so hard to choose which color way I'd like if I win! My first sewing project was many years ago when I was 8 or 9. Using my mother's classic old Singer I made very simple doll clothes for both a big baby doll and a much smaller doll. Skirts, blouses, pajamas, a cape. I still have some of them and just recently took a "trip down memory lane" as I took them out and studied each item....remembering how my mom lovingly taught me to sew, then I "took off" and sewed to my heart's delight using leftover scraps from my mother's and grandmothers sewing baskets. I've always LOVED to sew.

  128. Haha! My very first sewing project was a bunny rabbit that I never finished (I was also like, 9). I rediscovered sewing while I was being a professional sailor, but that was hand sewing with canvas. When I went back to machine sewing, I made a tool apron to hold my non-existent tools using scraps I won from a SMS giveaway day. So many "first" projects! I'd love to have a first project with some of your fabric!

  129. my very VERY first sewing project... i think was barbie clothing. i had a kit with the lines printed right on the fabric for where to cut, where to sew, where to dart, where to put a button or a snap. i believe the first one i made was a big blue jacket!
